TCG card condition: what to inspect before you trade or sell

Condition can matter as much as card identity. Take a consistent, careful look before assigning a value or deciding whether a card is worth grading.

Start with the surface

Under soft light, tilt the card gently and look for scratches, print lines, dents, stains, indentations, and creases. A crease or dent can have a substantial effect even when the front looks good at first glance.

Inspect edges and corners

Check for whitening, chipping, fraying, worn corners, and edge nicks. Compare both front and back; back-edge wear is easy to miss in a sleeve.

Look at centering and print quality

Uneven borders, off-center backs, ink dots, factory lines, and cut quality may influence collector interest and grading outcomes. These details do not automatically make a card valuable or gradeable.

Use condition language carefully

When trading or selling, show clear front-and-back photos and describe flaws plainly. Do not assume a raw card will receive a particular grade. Professional grading companies apply their own standards and final judgment.

Keep valuable cards in suitable sleeves and rigid holders, away from heat, moisture, and direct sun. Protecting condition is usually easier than recovering it.
